He received his primary education from Zion Lutheran Elementary School in Kearney and then graduated from Kearney High School with the class of 1971. He then continued to further his education at Kearney State College.

Following his education, Doug was employed by Rockwell Manufacturing in Kearney until he relocated to Ashland. During his years working at BD, Doug met Diane Weeder and the couple married on Nov. 16, 1979. They enjoyed the next 37 years together traveling, working together on their rentals and most of all spending time with their children and grandchildren. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, card player and traveled with the Texas Hold’em tournaments throughout the Midwest. Good friends were made at Sunmart with his coffee group socializing.

After retirement, Doug enjoyed volunteering in his community and abroad; serving with the Bloodmobile and Meals on Wheels; traveled with the American Red Cross to assist people affected by natural disasters; and active with Step Global, a nonprofit organization founded by Doug and his nephew, Jake Sikes, which focused on helping people in Third World countries with prosthetics. Doug’s passion was giving of himself to the needs of others.
